Plateau civil servants have embarked on a three-day strike in
solidarity with their colleagues in the Local Government Service who
have been at home since April.
The local government workers are on strike to force their employers to pay the N18,000 minimum wage as well as ensure the payment of full salaries, as against the half salaries they had received for several months.
The workers are also angry over the state government’s decision to post every worker to his or her respective home area.
The Plateau NLC chairman, Mr Jibrin Bancir, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Wednesday that the workers’ strike was to force the state government to take prompt steps to settle the local government workers.
“We want the state government to take a speedy action to meet the demands of the local government workers.
“Already, we have met with the State House of Assembly and various stakeholders on ways to resolve the issues, but it seems that government is dragging its feet and is not in any hurry to listen to the local government workers.’’
Bancir said the strike began on Wednesday, and would end on Friday, Aug. 17, 2012. (NAN)
